Channing Law advises on Kenyan Solar IPP

Chana Abrams of Channing Law International Limited is pleased to announce that it has advised Globeleq Africa Limited (a leading power developer in Africa) on the Engineering Procurement and Construction contract (EPC) and the Operations and Maintenance agreement (O&M) in respect of the 40 MWAC (52 MWp) photovoltaic solar project in Malindi, Kenya.

The US$69 million solar plant is located in Langobaya, Malindi District, Kilifi County, about 120 kms north-east of Mombasa. The power plant will deliver enough clean and renewable power to supply approximately 250,000 residential customers and will avoid 44,500 tons of CO2-equivalent emissions annually. The power plant will be made up of 157,000 photovoltaic panels and is one of the first IPP owned utility scale solar plants in Kenya and the only renewable power plant located in the coastal area.

The power generated plant will be sold under a long-term power purchase agreement to Kenya Power. Funding was provided by CDC, the UK’s development finance institution, as the mandated lead arranger with additional funding coming from DEG, the German development finance institution. Sterling & Wilson is the EPC and O&M contractor and Globeleq will oversee the construction and operations of the power plant.
