Channing Law is proud to have advised Globeleq on the EPC aspects of the 40 MWac Kafue Solar Project in Zambia, comprising two 20 MWac solar PV plants with an aggregate capacity of approximately 56.5 MWp, located near Kafue Town in Zambia’s Lusaka Province.
The project reached financial close on 30 September 2026, marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s renewable energy development. Notice to Proceed was also issued on 30 September 2026, enabling the project to proceed into the construction phase.
Channing Law led the negotiation of the EPC arrangements with the consortium of Solar Century Africa Limited and Alensy Energy Solutions Zambia Limited, structuring risk allocation, aligning the technical and commercial interfaces with the project’s financing and ensuring bankable and deliverable contractual arrangements.
The Kafue Solar Project is the first project to achieve financial close under the GET FiT Zambia Programme, led by Zambia’s Ministry of Energy with KfW, representing an important milestone for the programme and for Zambia’s efforts to expand its renewable energy generation capacity.
The project will sell its power to ZESCO under a 25-year power purchase agreement and once operational, is expected to supply clean energy to some 38,000 households and avoid approximately 48,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, creating around 200 jobs for Zambians at peak construction.
Long-term project finance was provided by British International Investment and FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, with Standard Bank South Africa acting as security trustee. The project also benefits from a grant facility from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation towards the grid connection and substation upgrade works. The transaction further adds to Channing Law’s track record of advising on and closing transactions in Zambia. Congratulations to all stakeholders contributing to Zambia’s renewable energy ambitions.
